Special Locations

Requirements for bathrooms, swimming pools, EV charging, and construction sites from BS 7671 Part 7.

Bathroom Zones — Section 701

Zone 0

Inside bath/shower basin. Only SELV ≤12V AC. Min IPX7.

Zone 1

Above Zone 0 up to 2.25m from floor. SELV ≤25V AC, fixed water heaters, shower pumps. Min IPX4 (IPX5 if water jets). 30mA RCD required.

Zone 2

0.6m outside Zone 1, extending to 2.25m height. Luminaires, fans, shavers, Class II heaters. Min IPX4. 30mA RCD required.

Outside Zones

Normal installation rules apply. 30mA RCD recommended for all circuits.

Note: All circuits in a bathroom require 30mA RCD protection (Reg 701.411.3.3)

BS 7671: Section 701

Swimming Pool Zones — Section 702

Zone 0

Interior of the pool basin, including recesses in walls and floors. Only SELV ≤12V AC permitted. IPX8 required.

Zone 1

1.5m from the pool edge and up to 2.5m height above floor level. Only SELV ≤25V AC, fixed equipment specifically designed for swimming pools. Min IPX4 (IPX5 where water jets used for cleaning). 30mA RCD required.

Zone 2

Beyond Zone 1, extending 1.5m horizontally and up to 2.5m height. Equipment must be Class I with 30mA RCD or Class II. Min IPX4.

BS 7671: Section 702

EV Charging — Section 722

Key Requirements

Dedicated circuit required for each EV charge point. 30mA RCD required. Type depends on EVSE: • Type A: if EVSE has built-in DC fault detection (RDC-DD) • Type F: for EVSE with frequency inverters • Type B: if EVSE has no internal DC residual current protection PME earthing considerations for outdoor installations — additional earth electrode may be needed. Load management systems required for multiple chargers to prevent supply overload.

Note: For TN-C-S supplies, additional earthing measures required for outdoor EV charging (Reg 722.411.4.1)

BS 7671: Section 722

Construction Sites — Section 704

Preferred supply: 110V centre-tapped earth (CET) for portable tools. 230V circuits: 30mA RCD protection required for all socket outlets. Assembly every 3 months required. Protection against mechanical damage essential.
